Two wounded Americans, a newsman and a marine, were handed over to U.S. Units by the rebels on Thursday. A Miami newspaper reporter was caught in his saloon car between marines and snipers at a checkpoint. The marine was wounded when convoying supplies into Santo Domingo.
The marine was shot when the convoy drove through Independence Park. Eyewitnesses said that the patrol was called on to stop by the rebels. The marines began firing, said the eyewitnesses, and their vehicles were then shot up, one marine being killed and others wounded. The wounded man was treated by rebels and then to the checkpoint. When he had been given further attention he was shipped with the journalist aboard the aircraft carrier «Boxer».
Groups of armed men are continually moving through the streets of Santo Domingo. They are the only sign of movement: everyone else keeps off the streets and away from the windows. Buildings are pocked with bullet-holes and garbage is strewn over the pavements. Damaged roads are made worse by rebel tanks moving to support snipers.
Last night (Friday) a new junta of two soldiers and a civilian was sworn in. It calls itself a «government of national reconciliation». Led by general Antonio Imbert Barreras it claims friendship with the rebel leader, colonel Caamano.
In an interview general Imbert claimed that it would improve the lot of the masses; seek assistance from the O.A.S. In finding political stability; and sweep away corruption.
Recommendations that a «technical-military group» be sent to the Dominican Republic has come from an inter-American peace-keeping mission. Sent by the organization of American states, the mission spent several days in the strife-torn republic and has now presented its proposals. Among them are the suggested technical-military group which would supervise the cease-fire, while another group would organize humanitarian aid.
