A four-day revolt in the Dominican Republic appears to have collapsed today (Wednesday) after loyalist air force and navy units took possession of the capital last night. Reports reaching San Juan in nearby Puerto Rico said that though sporadic fighting was still going on late last night between rebel soldiers and civilians, and general Wessin’s loyalist troops, the general’s combined offensive had encountered little resistance entering Santo Domingo.
Meanwhile, ex-president Bosch — in exile in San Juan — was understood to be awaiting a call from the coup leaders to return to Santo Domingo to take over the government. Dr. Bosch has lived in Puerto Rico since he was deposed by the triumvirate in 1963.
And at the U.S. Naval base at Roosevelt roads in Puerto Rico, preparations were under way yesterday to receive American refugees from the Dominican Republic. There are about 2,300 Americans in the republic. Those who wanted to leave were to be taken by aircraft-carrier to Puerto Rico. Eight-hundred of them were gathered in Santo Domingo’s ambassador hotel awaiting evacuation.
