DESCRIPCIÓN:

Seven thousand people gathered in the capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, on Sunday to attend a demonstration in support of the ruling military junta. While the crowd milled about, ships of the Dominican navy cruised into the harbor, and tanks and artillery weapons were set up facing the part of the city still controlled by colonel Camano’s men.
Many of those attending the rally were brought into the city in buses from small country villages. Some carried posters criticizing the Organization of American States, and there were outbreaks of chanting in which the crowd hailed the army commander general Wessin y Wessin for «hitting the reds hard.»
Speakers harangued the crowd for hours, assuring them that the reconstruction president, general Antonio Imbert Barreras would maintain power as long as there was a «communist threat» in the Ciudad Nueva — the part of the city still controlled by colonel Camano.
A lot of the people attending the rally, particularly the younger ones, spent more time gazing at the Dominican ships and artillery than listening to the speeches.
(During the night after this rally, a mortar barrage shattered the delicate truce that has kept the city at peace for some weeks. Representatives of the organization of American states reported that the firing seemed to come from the northern sector of Santo Domingo — the areas controlled by the «national reconstruction» junta.
