In spite of the ceasefire agreement accepted yesterday (Friday) by the insurgents and the forces loyal to the ruling military junta, sporadic fighting has continued today (Saturday) in Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic.
The crowds which thronged the city streets last Sunday were quickly disillusioned by the military junta, supported by the air force and the navy, who are opposing the return of ex-president Bosch. Tanks and aircraft from the San Isidro air base, under the command of general Wessin y Wessin, chief of staff of the armed forces, entered the city on Wednesday after a naval and air bombardment that left a death roll of more than 400.
Although there is a significant number of insurgent troops and armed civilians still in active opposition in the city center, general Wessin is still hopeful that the junta would be able to run the country until free elections are held in about three months’ time.
On Thursday, 500 U.S. Marines went ashore near the capital to protect and evacuate nearly 2,000 American citizens living there.
In a television broadcast to the nation on Friday night, president Johnson said the united states did not intervene in the Dominican republic revolt until it was told by officials there that they no longer were able to guarantee the safety of the Americans on the island. He stressed that the marines and airborne troops were sent to Santo Domingo for the sole purpose of protesting U.S. Citizens there.
Then, turning to the ceasefire, and the role of the Organization of American States, the president said.
