The Atmosphere In Santo Domingo Remains Tense And Confused: General Imbert, Leader Of The Original Revolutionary Junta Appeared In Public For The First Time since he was ousted to attend the funeral of one of his bodyguards yesterday (friday).
The man who killed general Imbert’s bodyguard was said to have lost two sons who had fought on the rebel side. Imbert’s presence at the funeral was taken as a sign that the murder was an act of political revenge.
But this was not the only political funeral in Santo Domingo yesterday — the other victim was major Luis Arias Collado. He was kidnapped on Monday and was found in a drain in the eastern part of the city on Thursday, his head decapitated by six bullets.
Major Collado was an officer in colonel Camaano’s ‘constitutionalist’ government forces during the Dominican Republic’s four months civil war. Following the installation of the provisional government of president Godoy, he was posted, with other ‘constitutionalists’ to the military camp from which he was kidnapped last Monday. The major’s fellow officer shave accused the armed forces training centre at San Isidro Air Base near Santo Domingo of the murder. The forces at the centre — under the command of brigadier general Wessin y Wessin, now consul general in Miami — opposed the rebel forces at the outbreak of the struggle for power.
At a news conference after the funeral, colonel Camano said that if the murders did not stop, they would defend themselves in every way possible.
