In Santo Domingo fierce fighting erupted on Tuesday between rebels and troops of the Organization of American States – mainly United States forces of the 21 people killed in the fighting, 17 were rebels.
The fighting ended a cease fire which had prevailed in the Dominican capital for the past four weeks. United States troops claimed that the rebels had ended the cease fire by firing on O.A.S. forces who had been forced to return the fire.
Twenty four United States paratroopers were injured in the battle.
A truce was arranged in the evening after a series of telephone conversations between rebel and O.A.S. commanders.
During the fighting United States force fired bazooka and mortar shells into buildings in the sector of the town occupied by rebels.one of the buildings damaged was customs shed, set ablaze by shells.
The United Nations Security Council met yesterday to discuss the situation in the Dominican Republic.
